Study Shows Aneurysm Expansion can get prevented by Consuming Green Tea Component ’Polyphenol.’
According to a study carried out at the Kyoto University, abdominal aortic aneurysm which is a medical condition where the body’s main artery becomes bloated could get prevented by regular consumption of green tea whose major component is polyphenol.
According to the author of the study, Kenji Minakata, Abdominal aortic aneurysms usually remain unnoticed until it finally ruptures because they do not have any warning symptoms. However, for a luckily patient whose bloating gets found before it ruptures, it is surgically treated by placing an artificial blood vessel in its place or a stent graft gets inserted.
Research on the benefits of drinking tea has recently shown that it prevents cardiovascular inflammation, oxidation, and cancer.
The lead author of the study, Shuji Setozaki explains that the particular type of polyphenol contained in green tea has been found to regenerate an essential protein called elastin. Elastin is responsible for giving an artery its study yet elastic texture. Setozaki added that the degradation of elastin components and inflammation are the main causes of abdominal aortic aneurysm and thus consuming green tea could be a potential cure for the condition.
During the study, rats were treated with abdominal aortic aneurysm induced enzymes, and it was discovered that the mice that drank polyphenol green tea did not develop the condition as much as the other rats. Also the mice showed signs of elastin production which prevented the artery from rupturing.
